    Hi all,

We are waiting to get our puppy in october, but I have been trying to get things ready for her. One thing that has been in the back of my mind is Pet insurance. I have pet insurance for one of my cats who’s brother had passed away unexpectedly and we thought it would be batter safe then sorry in case she had the same issue. I’ve hear many people say it’s a good idea, especially for the large breeds where things cost more due to their size. Do you have pet insurance? do you recommend a company? Is there a company best to stay away from? I would love to heard. -Colleen

    Hello Colleen,

I also considered pet insurance before we got Cali. I research into President’s Choice because I heard it was the most, or one of, cost effective policies out there. It wasn’t bad, but you’re right, with large breed dogs, come costs and pet insurance is no different – it is more expensive for Danes.

So, with the research realized the restrictions on the insurance when reading the fine print, as well as talking to other dog owners.

In the end, decided to open an additional savings account. We automatically deposit the same amount pet insurance would cost. If we need to use it for emergency/accident/sudden illness or disease it’s there and if not hopefully, then the $ is still ours. We won’t use it for regular vet appoints. Realistically, unfortunately, at some point HOPEFULLY end of life years away, is when we will end up using the account. The downside is if something were to happen sooner rather than later, time hasn’t permitted the account to get to a substantial amount yet. But we decided to do it this way anyway. I read about it in a finance book…

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,
    Monika
